Espressino (And Other Coffee Advice)
November 14, 2022
Have you ever heard of an espressino? I bet you haven’t. You’d think that there would be nothing new left for me to write about drinking and ordering coffee in Italy. But during the last few weeks, while I was leading our guests around Italy, I realized that there is one way of ordering coffee that needs just a little more explanation so I’m here to give some much needed coffee advice.
Onion Parmigiana

We all know and love eggplant parmigiana. And I’ve also delved into other parmigianesque treatments of vegetables like zucchini and fennel. But somehow I’ve failed to share my favorite parmigiana of them all: Onion Parmigiana.
The holidays are coming up fast. Do you know someone who loves Italy as much as you do and would appreciate a bit of it arriving in their inbox each month?
This is great - will be ordering a Marocchino asap!
Hi Elizabeth. I'm a huge coffee fan. I enjoyed your story on the espressino. I applaud Italy for its flexibility, yet keeping a classic hold on what seems to me its national drink.
You don't know how many times in the last 20 years I had to explain to a Starbucks barista in the US that the tall cappuccino (smallest cup on the menu) is actually something resembling a one pound latte. Hell, the recipe/ratios are online. Yet they pour the milk to the rim of the cup, regardless of how many shots of espresso. Flavor? Consistency? Respect for the drink? Out the window!
Marone!...
....I'm okay now. I need more coffee...
