Like everyone else I know I have an enormous folder of saved Instagram posts of recipes that I want to cook. Most of them are brightly colored, beautifully photographed somewhat exotic sounding vegetable forward dishes that I want to eat RIGHT NOW. But rather than wander into the kitchen to cook them, it’s much easier to save them, and keep scrolling. Since Sophie and I share a folder and can see when the other is adding something to it, we sometimes have a little online conversation about it along the lines of ‘yum’ or ‘love it!’. And then never look at this folder ever again.
The surprising thing is that when I actually go into the kitchen to cook my process of inspiration rarely goes back to these saved posts. It’s like they live in another fantasy dimension. For instance the other day, when I had a picked up a special variety of zucchini at the market I knew just where I would find a recipe. The variety of zucchini was Sicilian and I vaguely remembered a Sicilian recipe I had eaten or seen somewhere.
